New Tunes!

A few weeks back we finished making a record with Tom of Grim Fandango fame. The first track is back from mastering and you can listen to it here:

Let me know what you think.

I've known Stef for years. I think this may be the first time I've ever photographed him though.

Garden Progress

Chilis that will turn red soon. They are a rather spicy one.

The cucumber vines are grabbing at whatever they can reach, like the Broccolini here.

The cucumbers are coming out all curly. Like curly fries but healthier.

The mug is to give scale; foolishly I chose the biggest mug in the house. You could eat a decent breakfast out of it.

I have faint recollections from my early childhood of thinking that Gumby was awesome.

Send A Letter

Here is a nice little letter that you can send to your local Member of Parliament to ask that they support the implementation of a time limit on detention for asylum seekers, so that they are not held for many months, or even some years, in our detention centres. All you need to do is copy and paste the text, change the details that are written below in red, personalise it if you like, sign it and post it off to your local MP. The link below is a news story about 90 day limit recommendation, and the government's reluctance to commit.

Dear Ms. Parke,
I am writing to you to ask for your support of a 90 day time limit on detention of asylum seekers, as recommended by parliamentary enquiry recently. While I believe an even shorter time period would desirable, this time frame commitment for processing is an important step for the government to take in order to ensure that it protects the rights of those people seeking refuge in Australia.
As a signatory to the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Australia has made a commitment before the international community to uphold the ideals of this declaration to the best of our ability. Article Nine of the declaration denounces arbitrary detention. While I understand that, from an administrative point of view, processing asylum applicants is a large and necessary task, I believe that it is important that our government can respond to very real human need by making the rights of asylum seekers a priority. Adhering to a 90 day time limit on detention for processing should be achievable and would demonstrate Australia’s devotion to the cause of human rights.
In addition to the importance of this time limit for the rights of asylum seekers in Australian processing centers, a system of administration that works quickly and efficiently could improve Australia’s contribution to the global community in regions affected by disasters or conflict. Our society’s ability and responsibility to offer assistance to those forced to seek asylum is great, and may be able to ease the strain on our international neighbours in times of need.
I am requesting that you take a strong and outspoken stand for the implementation of a 90 day time limit for detention, both within the Labor Party and federal parliament. In doing so you would be protecting the rights of asylum seekers in Australia, and also representing the voice of young ethically-concerned citizens such as myself.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your response,
Kind Regards,
YOUR NAME.

I don't know if people like the photos on this blog or the writing more (or like it at all?) but I think I prefer when I'm putting up something a little more thought provoking than just pictures. Saying that though, pictures is kind of all I've had for a while, sorry. Here's another. I'm also playing around with square shots at the moment, this is the before and after crop shots.

Sometimes if I get to head south to Bunbury, my wee little brothers and I go for a good ole kick-push. I don't skate that much now that I'm living in Fremantle, so it is always a good time. Featured in these snaps is Noah, the younger, blonder and more foul-mouthed of my brothers, laying down some slides on a decent hill.

Foreign Aid?

Here's a little video that you may find engaging if you are interested at all in social justice or foreign aid.

I think it's great if you have a sponsor child, support the Millennium Development Goals, Make Poverty History etc. But are the effectiveness of these things limited or sabotaged by our trade habits in relatively wealthy 'developed' nations?
